Clinical Factors Relating to Prognosis of Bacterial Meningitis

Authors: ROBERT A. WIEBE, MD, FRANK W. CRAST, MD, RICHARD A. HALL, MD, JAMES W. BASS, MD

Abstract

This report reviews the factors related to prognosis in a large number of patients, chiefly children, with acute bacterial meningitis. The prognosis was poorer in infants, in those with pneumococcal meningitis, and in those with impaired consciousness at the time of admission. Duration of illness and previous antimicrobial therapy were not found to be prognostically significant.
