Commentary on “The Cancer Survivor’s History and Physical”

Authors: G. Richard Holt MD, MSE, MPH, MABE, DBioethics

Abstract

I commend Fuentes and colleagues of the University of Florida for their outstanding review of the approach to the cancer survivor’s transition back to the care of his or her primary healthcare provider, “Cancer Survivor’s History and Physical,” which is published in this issue of the Southern Medical Journal.1 The impetus from the Institute of Medicine regarding cancer survivor care plans, among other initiatives, has facilitated discussion and efforts to center follow-up care on the patient’s behalf, with enhanced interactions among oncologists and the patient’s primary health provider.
