Congenital Rubella A Review of the Virologic and Serologic Phenomena Occurring After Maternal Rubella in the First Trimester

Authors: CHARLES A. ALFORD JR. M.D. MRS., LOUISE S. KANICH

Abstract

The isolation of virus from the products of conception during the first trimester beautifully demonstrates the interrelationships of maternal rubella and the rubella syndrome in the fetus. The demonstration of rubella antibody in the infected fetus or infant offers another tool in the study of this prenatal infection. Studies such as these confirm the accumulating statistics and evidence of the teratogenic effects of the rubella virsus.
