Coxsackie Viral Infection of the Aorta of Man

Authors: G. E. BURCH MD, J. M. HARB PhD, Y. HIRAMOT MD

Abstract

Abstract:Positive immunofluorescent staining for Coxsackie virus B4 was demonstrated in the aorta of a 19-year-old man who died of Coxsackie viral cardiomyopathy. Lesions of the aorta were found both histologically and by electron microscope in association with large accumulations of lipid. It is speculated that such lesions in early life might be related to arteriosclerotic scarring in later life and that viral infection may play a role in the etiology of arteriosclerosis.
