Abstract

Editor's NoteOnce before, the Journal departed from its policy of not putting the likeness of a living person on its cover. It was to mark a Festschrift honoring its retiring editor, Rudolph H. Kampmeier, MD. We have not abandoned our policy—only violated it by again putting on the cover a portrait of the same individual. When I asked one of our former presidents if he thought this was setting a precedent, he replied that we could repeat it whenever any other man had done for SMA what Dr. Kampmeier had, but right off he couldn't think of any.Few men of medicine have either attained so many decades of productive labor or earned such widespread respect, acclaim, and affection from his peers. No more accurate and fitting word portrait of his attributes and career has been penned than that delivered by Grant Liddle, MD, Professor and Chairman of Vanderbilt Medical School's Department of Medicine, on the occasion of yet another tribute to this great man. It is appropriate that the Journal document the presentation of this portrait of a former President of our Association and long-time Editor of this Journal to the school he has served so ably and so long.
