Enzyme Patterns Reflecting Hepatic Response to Anesthesia and Operation*

Authors: DOLA S. THOMPSON MD, FERDINAND E. GREIFENSTEIN MD

Abstract

AbstractSGPT, SGOT, and SOCT analyses were made before and after operations. Increasing enzyme levels indicated changes in hepatic function. Enzyme increases which occur postoperatively on the day of operation are associated with upper abdominal operations. Increases seen on postoperative day seven are associated with all types of operations. There were no differences observed in enzyme patterns between halothane, methoxyflurane, or spinal anesthesia. There is evidence that enzyme increases are of greater magnitude after the halogenated anesthetics than after spinal anesthetics. The results were quite different with cyclopropane as there were no abnormal levels after this agent nor were there rising trends on postoperative day seven as with the other anesthetics.
