Fatal Coxsackievirus B4 Infection in a Neonate

Abstract

SUMMARYWe reported a fatal coxsackievirus B4 infection in a neonate. The CSF WBC was elevated, with polymorphonuclear leukocytes predominating initially and lymphocytes predominating later in the illness. Autopsy findings included inflammation of the heart and liver. Coxsackievirus B4 was isolated from the heart and quantitated as 103 50% tissue culture infectious doses (TCID50) per gram of myocardium.
