Interstitial Radiotherapy for Intraoral Carcinoma

Authors: SEYMOUR FISKE OCHSNER MD, VINCENT P. COLLINS MD

Abstract

AbstractCarcincma in the intraoral area presents many problems in management and erudication. Interstitial radiation is a useful method of treating this condition for several reasons: The radiation dose in the tumor is maximal and high in the surrounding tissues, but in the normal tissues a few centimeters away it is low. The physical discomfort of the patient is lessened. Hospitalization may be shortened or eliminated. We have used radon seed implantation as a convenient and effective method of interstitial irradiation. In many patients, the radon seed implant has been supplemented by external beam therapy. Examples are presented to illustrate the advantages of interstitial radon seed therapy in carcinoma of the floor of the mouth, anterior portion of the tongue, palate, tonsil, and oropharyax.
