Abstract

Abstract:Some 215 disease categories, each comprising 25 to 1,355 patients, represented 97.6% of 23,714 patients who had an admission metabolic profile of 28 serum chemistries. Almost every disease had a unique chemical template. Twenty-one circulatory diseases, representing 3,853 patients, were separated out from the other illnesses by a syndrome consisting of: (1) normal or low alpha' globulin (indicating low fat depletion); (2) normal or low leucine aminopeptidase (indicating absence of liver, pancreas, or gallbladder disease); (3) elevated lactic dehydrogenase (indicating increased muscle stress); and (4) azotemia (indicating weakened heart pump) consisting of elevated creatinine, elevated BUN, and low albumin levels (two of the three).
