Lowering LDL Cholesterol is Beneficial: How Much, How Long, and With Which Means Remains Unclear

Authors: Ioanna Gouni-Berthold, MD

Abstract

The question whether cholesterol lowering with the combination of ezetimibe and simvastatin is beneficial cannot be answered with Effect of Combination Ezetimibe and High-Dose Simvastatin versus Simvastatin Alone on the Atherosclerotic Process in Patients with Heterozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (ENHANCE), a study examining a surrogate marker for atherosclerosis. Only the results of endpoint trials can provide valid answers regarding the merits of therapeutic measures. In the mean time, aggressive LDL-C lowering for high risk patients should continue.
