Abstract

Abstract:For a three-year period, neurology clinics were conducted in outstate areas where no neurologic services were otherwise available. Neurologic consultation, screening, and diagnostic services were provided to patients of the Mississippi Department of Public Health. The clinics were organized and staffed under the joint auspices of the Mississippi State Board of Health and the University Medical Center, Division of Neurology. At the conclusion of the three-year period, the project was evaluated by comparing medical and social data collected on follow-up of a sample of the patient population with data collected from the first clinic visit. The clinics have filled a need in making these neurologic services available to persons in areas away from medical centers. The majority of the persons evaluated were improved both medically and socially at the time of follow-up.
