Surgical Management of Stag‐Horn Renal Calculi

Authors: DONALD F. McDONALD M.D.

Abstract

AbstractManagement of large renal calculi after initiating a new surgical approach is reviewed. The approach includes sterilization of the urine, removal of all calculi through the extended pyelotomy incision described by Surraco and Gil-Vernet, intraoperative irrigation of the calices with the Water Pik, postoperative tomography, irrigution of the renal collecting system with warm Suby solution M to dissolve stone fragments and long-term office follow-up. One hundred forty adult patients with renal or ureteral calculi were studied. Those with stug-horn stones are the subjects of this paper. Certain comparisons are drawn between patients having the large renal colculi and those with the small ureteral stones. Compared with other surgical approaches, early results suggest that our technic has shorter operating time and reduced blood loss.
