A Prospective Study of Stress Ulceration in Vietnam

Authors: JOHN C. BOWEN MD, WILLIAM H. FLEMING MD

Abstract

Abstract:Based on the experience of previous Vietnam study teams, a set of criteria was developed to select patients with a high risk of stress ulceration for prospective study. During a six-month period, 2,720 surgical patients were screened and 37 (1.4|X%) selected for study prospectively. A review of the literature disclosed 28 different substances mentioned as possible mediators of stress ulcer, and all 28 were measured serially in these patients. Nineteen of the 37 patients (51|X%) developed stress ulcer and nine of these required transfusion. This clearly indicated that a high-risk group suitable for prospective study can be identified.
