Benign Goiter as a Cause of Postintubation Airway Obstruction

Abstract: A case is presented of a large, benign goiter causing acute airway obstruction following tracheal intubation. Large goiters may cause significant unsuspected compression of the trachea, and edema following tracheal intubation may precipitate acute obstruction. Special precautions are required in these patients to minimize tracheal edema, and prompt recognition of developing airway obstruction is necessary to prevent a fatal complication
