Authors: WILLIAM H. HALAMA, MD, JACK L. MAULDIN, MD

Abstract

GUAR GUM is a high polymer hydrophilic carbohydrate that has considerable expansion and thickening qualities when placed in water. It is used as an additive to many products, as a lipid and glucose lowering agent, and as an aid for weight loss. We present two cases describing the adverse effects from a guar gum preparation, Cal-Ban 3000 (Anderson Pharmaceuticals, Lutz, Fla), used in the treatment of obesity.
