Abstract

Abstract: Three drainage operations are currently used to manage duodenal ulcers intractable to more conservative measures: pyloroplasty, gastrojejunostomy, and gastroduodenostomy. Since the first two have several attending disadvantages, we performed animal experiments to evaluate the efficacy of gastroduodenostomy. We also have performed the operation on 12 patients. We have found gastroduodenostomy (Jaboulay procedure) with truncal vagotomy to be an effective operation in preventing the formation of peptic ulcers in dogs. It is easier to perform and produces better emptying than pyloroplasty. Moreover, the use of the duodenum rather than the jujunum for the anastomosis is physiologically sound. The early results in patients have been encouraging.
