Hyperfunctioning Thyroid Adenoma in a Euthyroid Adolescent

Authors: ARLAN L. ROSENBLOOM MD, MARCUS M. MOORE MD

Abstract

Abstract: A 16-year-old boy without clinical hyperthyroidism had a hyperfunctioning nodule of the thyroid that was not suppressible with thyroid hormone replacement therapy. The nodule suppressed radioiodine uptake in the rest of the gland; exogenous rhyrotropin (TSH) injection stimulated extranodular tissue to concentrate radiolabel. The excised nodule was a typical adenoma with colloid-containing microfollicles and macrofollicles. Autonomous solitary thyroid adenoma without hyperthyroidism has not been reported previously in childhood or adolescence.
