Postpartum Pituitary Insufficiency: Report of Five Unusual Cases with Long-Term Follow-up
Abstract
Five cases of postpartum pituitary insufficiency are reported. The manifestations of the disease vary with the degree of absence of particular trophic hormones. Pituitary damage is not necessarily proportional to the degree of blood loss. Irregular and scanty menstrual periods resulted in one of the patients although otherwise symptomatic. Adrenal function seemed to be profoundly affected in all cases. One of the patients was able to carry six full-term pregnancies once the adrenal disturbance was corrected. Two patients subsequently developed hypertension, of whom one had an episode of myocardial infarction. This content is limited to qualifying members.
