Abstract

Did you know that college athletes consume more alcohol and binge drink more frequently than their nonathletic counterparts? Why is this? One explanation may be that athletes are more likely to exhibit the strong social ties which are often associated with binge drinking. Although many special educational programs do target athletes, they have not sufficiently impacted the problem. Future prevention efforts should address the unique social and environmental influences on athletes. Colleges, athletic departments, coaches, and sports medicine professionals are urged to help athletes recognize the potential dangers of intoxication.
