Spirituality/Medicine Interface Project

The Southern Medical Association’s Perspective

Authors: Edward J. Waldron

Abstract

Through the ages, belief systems have had remarkable effects upon the course of human events. Individual belief systems have often been the catalyst for performance beyond personal abilities or resources. In light of this, the following questions require consideration. Does a synergism exist between spirituality and medicine? If so, how should the interface between the two be explored? How should the external interface between physicians, spiritual advisors, and their patients be managed? The purpose of the Southern Medical Journal in initiating a Medicine/Spirituality Interface Project is to promote among physicians and health care professionals an appreciation of the importance that spirituality and religion may have in their patients’ lives and to assist professionals in understanding how these factors may modulate their patients’ responses to disease.
