Abstract

A RECENT computerized search of the medical literature failed to yield a case of primary pneumonia caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, though Cecils Textbook of Medicine, circa 1943, lists a myriad of gonococcal complications, including “pneumonia (usually embolic).”1 In the Communicable Disease Centers recommended treatment schedules for gonorrhea, 1979,2 there is no mention of pneumonia caused by Ngonorrhoeae. The low incidence and/or complete lack of pneumonia due to N gonorrhoeae is difficult to understand in view of the reports in the current literature3,4 concerning the high incidence of pharyngeal gonococcal infections in both men and women.
