Use of Corticosteroids in the Treatment of Infectious Diseases

Authors: MARVIN KROBER MD, Oklahoma City, Okla

Abstract

SUMMARYPotential advantages and disadvantages of the use of corticosteroids as adjunctive therapy for infections have been discussed. Steroids must be given in all patients with adrenal insufficiency in amounts sufficient to cover stress needs. Indications for the use of steroids in patients with normal adrenal function were discussed. Specific criteria should be applied based on controlled clinical studies.
