Early Decompression Fasciotomy in the Treatment of High‐Voltage Electrical Burns of the Extremities

AbstractBased on a knowledge of electropathophysiology, a recommended treatment has been proposed for the management of extensive high-voltage electrical burns. Early, aggressive, surgical intervention consisting of adequate decompression fasciotomy and wound debridement has been emphasized as the first line of treatment. Frequent redebridements under general anesthesia are important to the…

Renal Artery Stenosis—Then and Now

AbstractDiagnostic approaches evolve steadily. Selective renal arteriography and determination of renal vein renins have replaced differential clearances and translumbar aortography. The hydrated intravenous pyelogram remains helpful in assessing physiologic significance and complements both aortography and renin determinations. Except for young patients, medical treatment rather than surgical management usually is preferred.

Serum Chemistry Templates of Disease in Liver, Pancreas, and Gallbladder

AbstractOn routine hospital admission, 23,714 patients received a 28-test serum metabolic profile. The 33 most common diseases (4,132 patients) of liver, pancreas, and gallbladder (LPG) had unique chemical templates averaging 15 significant serum deviations. Each LPG disease differed from all others by elevations of both leucine-aminopeptidase (LAP) and alkaline phosphatase…

Southern Thoracic Surgery

AbstractThe different cultures of North and South produced surgeons with subtle but identifiable differences in approaches to thoracic surgery. Some of these factors still represent a strength of the Southern thoracic surgeon, who is, at least spiritually, a descendant of early Southern surgical leaders. Background, contributions, observations, and attitudes of…
